“If you’re looking for your next foodie destination look no further than Lima, Peru. The cuisine will surprise you with sensations and flavors you never thought possible before. What was so special about the cuisine was the consistent excellent execution of such a wide variety of dishes across different restaurant concepts. No matter what you’re having you can be sure it will be executed with perfection.
Peru is a gastronomic paradise because of the melting pot of cultures and incredible biodiversity. There is an abundance of ingredients across the different environments for chefs to explore and reinvent. You have the Pacific ocean, the exotic Amazon, the desert, the Andes mountains, and so much more packed into one spectacular country.
There is something to eat for everyone. Do not sleep on the cultural fusion unique to Peru such as Nekkei (Japanese-Peruvian) and Chifa (Cantonese-Peruvian. ) You may be familiar with chef Nobu, the creative genius behind the global brand who started Nobu restaurants which have now expanded into Nobu hotels. He took traditional Japanese cooking techniques and fused them with the flavors of Peru to create an entirely new cuisine that is now a global sensation. If you’ve ever had a yellow tail jalapeno dish just know that this is Nekkei that was originally created by chef Nobu.
During my recent visit I had the absolute pleasure to dine at a variety of world class restaurants (some even listed on the world's top 50 restaurants). I made reservations in advance but overall did not have a ton of trouble booking and was able to visit all the places I intended. We ate at Astrid y Gaston, Mayta, Isolina, and Osaka, just to name a few! From local comfort food in laid back environments to tasting menus with performance quality service, we were captivated by the experiences we had. It is truly worth it to visit Lima to experience the dining scene alone.
If Machu Picchu is on your bucket list like so many of our travelers you should highly consider adding on a few days in Lima to experience the restaurant culture.
