Thailand: 8 Things Every First-Time Visitor Should Experience

Let’s get right to it. Here is a fun check list for your first visit to the Land of Smiles, created for you by the Thailand experts at VIVE Society Travel.

 01. Buy the Elephant Pants. Seriously.

Are they touristy? Absolutely. Will you see hundreds of other travelers wearing them? Probably. But buying your first pair of elephant pants is practically a Thailand rite of passage.

They make great gifts to bring home too!

 02. Get a Thai Massage. Then Another.

A traditional Thai massage is a must, but don't overlook the simple pleasure of a daily foot massage after exploring. While you're at it, make time for a beautiful spa experience. Prices are affordable for any type of traveler. Seriously, the massages alone are worth the long flight to Thailand!

03. Go Beyond Photographing Temples

Thailand is home to some of the world's most incredible temples. But don't just walk through, take pictures and leave. Visit with a knowledgeable licensed guide who can explain the history, traditions and spiritual significance. Visitors are often welcomed to participate in a blessing or other local ritual. It's an entirely different experience when you understand what you're seeing.

 04. Find Your Perfect Thai Island

Thailand's islands are breathtaking, but here's something many first-time visitors don't realize: they're not all the same, and the seasons matter! The Andaman coast and Gulf islands have different weather and very different experiences. We strongly recommend working with a travel professional to plan at least this portion of your trip so you experience the right islands at the right time.

05. Hop in a Tuk Tuk

No trip to Thailand is complete without a ride in one of these colorful, three-wheeled taxis! They're loud, a little chaotic, and half the fun is weaving through the busy streets with the wind in your hair. It's one of the many ways Thailand makes getting around easy, fun, and convenient. Hire your own tuk-tuk driver to take you shopping, explore local markets, or discover some of the best street food along the way!

 06. Eat Your Way Through a Local Market

Mango sticky rice? Yes. Banana roti? Absolutely. And don't leave without trying durian, the famously pungent fruit that smells like feet but tastes like heaven! Whether it's a bustling night market or a neighborhood food stall, some of Thailand's most enjoyable experiences happen around food. Come hungry and curious.

 07. Meet Thailand's Gentle Giants

Visiting an ethical elephant sanctuary can be one of the most meaningful experiences of your trip. Choose a reputable, observation-focused sanctuary where elephants can roam naturally without riding, performances or forced interaction. Donating to the elephant rehabilitation programs in Thailand is a special way to give back to the country that brings you so much happiness.

08. Experience Thailand After Dark

Thailand's famous nightlife is unlike anywhere else in the world. Glamorous rooftop bars, night markets and neon-lit entertainment streets can all be part of the same evening. In some nightlife districts, you might see families out strolling just steps away from adult entertainment venues. It's an unexpected mix of everyday life and after-dark energy that has to be seen to be understood.
